This project is situated within the debate revolving around art, industry and ecology, focusing on the relationship between industry and the coastal area of Aberavon, Port Talbot. Port Talbot is major steel producing town with one of the deepest harbours in the world and has a community which is highly dependent on the steel industry.

Although industry has declined, Wales is still part of a global network, industrialised and connected. Wales still has an industrial base, very different from the heavy industry of the past but raw materials and goods are still being imported and exported to and from all parts of the globe. CARGO 2 is an antidote to the malaise and cultural amnesia felt in industrial Wales since the decline of industry.

Port Talbot is a heavily polluted area with measured air levels of particulate matter PM10 in the town reaching dangerously high levels on the government’s air pollution scale and it also has some of the highest sea acidity levels of the Welsh coastline. This is a local version of bigger and broader issues.

CARGO 2 also explores the bonding of people to places. The environment we are brought up in exerts pressure on our personality formation, and the culture in which we are raised plays a substantial role in shaping our personalities. In this way people come to feel part of a place and associate personal and group identity with the identity of that place.

Mae’r prosiect yma wedi’ leoli o fewn y ddadl sy’n amgylchynu celf, diwydiant ac ecoloeg gan ffocysu ar y berthynas rhwng diwydiant ac arfordir Aberafan, Port Talbot. Mae Port Talbot yn dref sy’n cynhyrchu dur gyda chymuned sy’n dibynnu ar y diwydiant. Yno mae un o borthladdoedd mwya dwfn y byd.

Er fod y diwydiant wedi dirywio, mae Cymru dal i fod yn rhan o’r rhwydwaith byd-eang, wedi’ ddiwydiannu ac yn gysylltiedig. Mae Cymru dal i fod â cartref diwydiannol yn wahanol i ddiwydiant trwm y gorffennol, er hyn, mae’r wlad dal i fewnforio ac allforio deunydd crai a nwyddau dros y byd. Mae CARGO 2 yn ‘wrthgyffyr’ i’r anhwylder a’r amnesia diwylliannol sy’n cael ei deimlo yma yn y Cymru diwydianol ers dirywiad y diwydiant.

Mae Port Talbot yn ardal sydd wedi’ lygru’n drwm gyda lefelau aer o fater gronynnol PM10 yn y dref, gan gyrraedd lefelau perryg ar raddfa aer llygredig y llywodraeth. Mae ganddo hefyd lefelau asidedd uchaf arfordir Cymru. Mae hyn yn fersiwn lleol o fater mwy eang.

Mae CARGO 2 hefyd an archwilio’r bond rhwng pobl a llefydd. Mae amgylchedd a diwylliant ein magwraeth yn rhoi pwysau ar ffurfiad ein personoliaeth. O ganlyniad mae pobl yn dod yn rhan o le, ac yn cysylltu hunaniaeth personol grwp gyda hunaniaeth y lle hwnw.
